Simulations mimic real world conditions. When participants practice new behaviors and try on new attitudes under the "real world" conditions of a simulation, they gain insights that are unobtainable when listening to a lecture, view video, or practicing an isolated skill in other training or educational sessions.

We often use symbols and metaphors in our simulations. These symbols and metaphors make it easier for participants to talk about difficult or taboo topics.
For example, most employees and managers do not want to talk about power - who has it, who doesn't, how it is used in their organization. After confronting, dissecting, and responding to the way Squares use their power in the StarPower simulation, participants are willing and eager to use the StarPower metaphors and symbols to talk about power in their own organizations.
